SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Dinner and a movie. Saratoga Springs has the first part, but you have to leave town for the latter. Something that does surprise some visitors.

"One of the comments that I heard from virtually everybody was, 'Wow. We're really surprised you don't have a theater in the downtown in the first place,'" said Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus about a downtown tour he gave recently.

A movie theater could be coming to downtown on Railroad Place, according to plans filed with the Saratoga County Planning Department. The county has approved an 11-screen theater with seating for nearly 1,800 people proposed by Bonacio Construction. The plan also calls 36,000 square feet of office space. Company president Sonny Bonacio was unavailable for comment, but some business leaders are excited about the plan.

"I think there's a real opportunity for us here to do something different within the downtown to create another amenity, another reason to come to Saratoga Springs," Shimkus said. "Certainly we've got the capacity to make this work."

We spoke to some Spa City business people who asked to remain off camera because they expressed concerns the project may not work because of a lack of parking here in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Project developers don't believe parking will be a problem, however. In documents filed with the county planning department, their calculations show only an additional 54 trips into downtown Saratoga Springs because of the office space and movie theater. Although that calculation assumes the movie theater is 30 percent full.

The project is still in the early stage as plans must receive city approval.
