NISKAYUNA, N.Y. -- Proceeds from a recent 5K run were donated to two local groups. The money raised at the Strides for Sandy Hook 5K run in January was distributed by the Niskayuna Moms on the Run at the Town Board meeting Tuesday night.

Both the Niskayuna Fire Department #1 and the Van Antwerp Middle School Best Buddies Program received funds.

The money donated to Best Buddies was in honor of 14-year-old Grace Kline. Kline was the victim of a house fire back in January. Fire officials say they plan on using the funds to benefit the community, while increasing fire prevention and safety, in memory of Kline.

"We work with preschool aged kids, elementary aged kids and one of the areas that we don't hit on a regular basis are the young teenagers and the middle school aged children and that's something we'd like to work on addressing and our hope is to utilize some of these funds towards that end," said Chief Dale Lingenfelter.

Funds were also donated to The Newtown Park Gift Fund who is building a memorial in honor of the children and teachers lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
