GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The plan to put an indoor shooting range in Green Island is under fire.

Les McDermott, the owner of Veteran's Gun Shop, wants to put an indoor firing range at 19 Lower Hudson Avenue. The planned expansion was the topic of a public meeting.

The community has mixed reaction about having a firing range in the village.

Some parents are concerned the location is too close to schools in the area.

The mayor says she's open minded about the proposal, and any economic boost it may bring to Green Island.

"I think that having guns in the face of children on a daily basis is not a good idea. I believe it's glorifying something that is an extremely controversial issue," one person said.

"I totally understand parents' concerns, with their children and everything else. An operation like this is not going to jeopardize the children in school any more than anything else that you might do," Mayor Ellen McNulty-Ryan said.

There would need to be a change to village firearms code for the range to be put in place. The range would have to be put no closer than 140 feet from a home.

The mayor says any such amendments would actually make the firearms code more strict.

While the village board passed the local law, the planning board tabled the gun range proposal until next month.
