NEW YORK STATE -- Government officials want to add a half million people to New York's Medicaid plan.
The program, which offers health insurance to low-income residents, already covers 5.1 million New Yorkers. That’s more than a fourth of the state's population.
Officials say about 75,000 people will be added as part of the Affordable Healthcare Act rules, which take effect next year. The other 425,000 people are expected to be enrollees who didn't know they were eligible.
Medicaid costs at all levels in New York are expected to surpass $57 billion in the next fiscal year.
