MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. -- State Police are investigating whether someone set the fire that consumed an empty barn that had housed a pit bull breeding operation in the Mohawk Valley.

The fire early Saturday in the Montgomery County town of Minden leveled the former cow barn where 51 pit bulls were seized in January. The owners of the dogs face animal cruelty charges. Their lawyer says the dogs were not mistreated.

There were no animals in the barn when it burned down, and no injuries were reported. Nobody lives at the address any more.

Investigators say there were two previous attempts to burn down the barn.
