TROY, N.Y. -- One day after city counselors voted him in after a vocal protest from the current police chief's wife, Troy's new police commissioner is sworn in.

Anthony Magnetto, who served for 35 years in the Troy Police Department and rose to the rank of assistant chief before retiring in 2011, was sworn in as commissioner Friday afternoon.

Magnetto was voted in the night before at the city council meeting.

At that same meeting, Police Chief John Tedesco's wife, Charlene, surprised many when she took the microphone and criticized the mayor's appointment of Magnetto, who served as the best man in their wedding.

Tedesco said, "Congratulations on your promotion, Tony. I'm heartbroken that we've lost a friendship, from the bottom of my heart, I'm sorry… You people, my heart breaks that my husband has to come to work here, breaks, but you know what? We'll be here after you're all gone, I want you to know that, particularly you."

"I'm not going to comment on that, that's been my position since last evening and I know that's not what you're looking for, but I don't want to comment on that. ((So you don't think it's a distraction?)) No, that's in the rearview mirror, I'm looking ahead,” said Anthony Magnetto, Troy Police Commissioner.

Magnetto was voted in seven to two Thursday night. Neither Chief Tedesco or his wife attended Friday's swearing-in ceremony.
