WASHINGTON -- After being sworn in on Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry officially introduces himself to State Department employees in Washington, D.C.

Kerry is the nation's 68th Secretary of State. During his speech Monday, he vowed to protect U.S. foreign service workers from terrorist attacks overseas. He also said the protection of American diplomats will be a top priority.

Kerry served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for four years.

In a speech to his staff, the former Massachusetts senator joked about whether he's qualified for the job.

"Here's the big question before the country and the world and the State Department after the last eight years," Kerry said. "Can a man actually run the State Department? I don't know. As the saying goes, I have big heels to fill."

Kerry is replacing Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stepped down last week. Before that, Condoleezza Rice held the post.
