ALBANY, N.Y. – “I think you will see a very robust State of the State,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Cuomo will take the stage Wednesday afternoon at the Empire State Plaza convention center to give his third State of the State Address. He's expected to tackle topics ranging from an increase to the state's minimum wage to recovering from Hurricane Sandy and new gun control measures.

“This state has tremendous needs that are being presented at this time. The issue of gun violence, the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, these are just issues of the day,” Cuomo said.

The gun control measure one is goal Cuomo would like to see done this month following a spat of mass shootings across the country. On the table is an updated assault weapons ban and restrictions on high-capacity magazines. Senate Republicans have countered with proposals to curb illegal guns in the hands of criminals, but say a compromise can be struck.

“We have our priorities on that issue and the governor has his and hopefully we can come to a reasonable expectation where something can actually stop these horrific killings,” said State Senator Tom Libous.

But Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says the anti-crime proposals pushed by the Senate GOP don't go far enough.

“The Senate has been very responsive to the gun lobby and used these lies in order to avoid the truth which is they want to be responsive to the gun lobby,” Silver said.

Though the governor wants gun control passed this month, Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb said it's better to wait and develop a more comprehensive approach.

“I think that we should not be jamming through a bill for political purposes rather than doing a reasoned, sound approach on every single aspect,” Kolb said.

Negotiations on gun control were expected to run through the night. Sources tell Capital Tonight that a deal could even be struck before Cuomo delivers his speech.
