RENSSELAER, N.Y. -- Firefighters responded overnight to a fire at a volunteer ambulance station in Rensselaer. It happened at the volunteer station on the corner of 3rd Street and Harrison Avenue around 3 a.m.

Firefighters tell us the fire was mainly on the first floor with heavy smoke on the second. There was a lot of damage inside the building and to several of the ambulances.

Despite the weather, crews were able to put the fire out quickly before more damage could happen.

"The snow kind of slows you down a little bit but, other than that everybody did a good job getting water on the fire in a timely fashion,” said Jay Corcoran, Assistant Chief, Rensselaer Fire Dept.

No injuries were reported. Officials say they ambulance station and the vehicles need to be evaluated, and they believe it will be a while before it reopens.

No word yet on a cause.
