TROY, N.Y. -- A real life Grinch tried to steal Christmas from some fraternity brothers in Troy.

Police responded to an alarm at the Phi Lambda Phi RPI fraternity on Pawling Avenue. When they got there, they found Robert Fogarty, 42, standing on the front porch holding what looked like a black box. Fogarty got scared, ditched the box under a parked car and took off running. Police eventually caught up with him and took him into custody.

That black box? Turns out it was an expensive Xbox video game console.

Fogarty has now been charged with burglary and resisting arrest.

Police have some tips to keep your home safe, as burglars do their own window shopping during the holidays.

"Make the house looked lived in, make the vehicles in the driveway look used as much as possible and make the doorways look accessible. The more signs of habitation, the less chance of burglars coming in and ruining your Christmas," said Troy Police Spokesman John Cooney.

Fogarty didn't claim to be the Grinch, but did lie to police about his real name a few times. Apparently he was trying to hide that he's on parole for a previous burglary. He was also charged giving a false name.
