Lawsuit filed against American Tree Company

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office has filed a lawsuit against American Tree Company out of Lake George.

The AG's office says the company gouged its prices following Tropical Storm Irene. Price increases for essential goods or services during an "abnormal market disruption" like a tropical storm is illegal.

The lawsuit claims the company raised its prices, charging as much as $10,000 per tree for removal and added undisclosed emergency service and after hours fees.

The lawsuit says at least 10 consumers paid between $11,000 and nearly $50,000 for removal services.

According to the AG's office, the company charged no more than $4,000 before the storm hit.

The lawsuit is calling for the business to be prohibited from engaging in illegal and deceptive practices and restitution for victims.
