MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. -- Two school districts are beginning the process of becoming one. Oppenheim-Ephratah voters approved a merger with St. Johnsville on Tuesday night.

The combined district doesn't go into effect until July 1st, 2013, but prep work between school officials and their respective communities will begin right away. Residents will hit the polls again in six weeks to vote on how many members and how long terms should be for the new Board of Education.

"Six weeks after that we'll actually have a formal board of election take place in the combined district, and the new board will then be elected and start formally July 1st of 2013," said Dan Russom, Oppenheim-Ephratah Superintendent.

"A lot of preparation, a lot of communication between both districts. Both districts have to be uniform, not just with student management, but also with curriculum," said Laura Campione-Lawrence, St. Johnsville Superintendent.

St. Johnsville residents didn't participate in Tuesday’s vote. They approved the merger last year.
