DELMAR, N.Y. -- Sunday night marks the second night of Chanukah. The Bethlehem Chabad held a menorah lighting celebration in Delmar at the intersection of Delaware and Kenwood avenues, also known as the "four corners."

Rabbi Simon of the Bethlehem Chabad says they put the menorah at the center of downtown to make the holiday more universal. He says the whole world needs more light and Chanukah is a time for people to grow in their moral and ethics and light up what he calls a dark world.

A celebration was held at town hall after the menorah was lit. People indulged in jelly donuts, potatoes latkes and other traditional Chanukah foods.

The holiday honors the fall of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem more than 2,500 years ago and their victory over the Greek army.

"The liberty, the freedom that we enjoy in America, and of course as Jewish people, we really, really appreciate it, ‘cause people came from oppression, our fathers, our great grandfathers came from Eastern Europe and different places in the world and here we are free, so we're lighting up the world with the Chanukah menorah," Rabbi Simon said.

Some local children also teamed up to build a canned food menorah. All the canned goods will be donated to the Bethlehem food pantry.
