CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. -- More than 6,000 people gathered at Shenendehowa High School to pay tribute to two teens whose lives were cut short by a car crash.

Thousands came out in support of Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers and their families, lighting candles, displaying signs and sharing stories about the popular teens who were student athletes with bright futures.

Both Stewart and Rivers were killed after a crash this weekend on the Northway. Another Shen student, Matt Hardy, and Shaker student Bailey Wind were both injured in the crash.

Hardy was escorted in an ambulance by State Police to be a part of the vigil.

Bailey Wind's sister spoke at the vigil about how well loved Chris and Deanna were in the community.

During the ceremony, speakers urged the community to come together and remain strong following the tragedy.

“Everybody has their bad minutes and their good minutes. But what makes the good minutes and what pulls you out, what's pulled me, personally, out of the bad minutes is just thinking about Chris. It's amazing that the person who's not with us any more is the one that's been the most supportive for me and he's the one that's pulling me through this. I wish more than anything he was here, but it's just hard to explain how amazing a person can still get you through the hardest time in your life and not even be here,” said Shen football player Lucas Buckley.

The school's football and softball teams retired both of the teen's numbers. Deanna was a softball player on the team and Chris was a football player.
