There is much sorrow in one community after a car crash takes one girl's life and sends four others to the hospital. Elaina Athans has more.

NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- "It hasn't hit me yet. It doesn't feel real, but I know it's real," said Anthony Squires, who is a friend of Alana Tadry.

Flowers planted and a teddy bear placed in the spot where a 15-year-old girl lost her life. Alana Tadry of Plattekill was killed in a car accident. She was ejected from the vehicle, thrown 30 feet into the woods and died instantly.

The teenager and three friends were driving to Anthony Squires' house, someone she's known since childhood. The night of the accident, he says the group was heading to his house to hang out.

"We called everyone in the car and nobody picked up," said Squires. "So we ended up walking down here and seeing all the commotion."

The accident happened Monday night along Route 32 in the Town of Newburgh. Police say the driver of Tadry's car was attempting to pass at least one vehicle and was hit by oncoming traffic. The car was sliced in half.

Four other people involved in the crash were sent to the hospital, one with serious injuries.

"It's just a tragedy for the families involved with this accident. You are talking five different families are impacted in some way and some more than others," said Town of Newburgh Police Chief Michael Clancy.

Tadry was a sophomore at Wallkill Senior High School. Principal Mike Rydell said she'll be remembered for her kindness and positivity.

Police aren't saying if alcohol or drugs played a factor. Evidence was collected from the car Tadry was in, but police won't comment on what was taken.

"There's still a lot of unanswered questions and follow up work to be done," said Clancy.

No charges have been filed. Police have spoken to the witnesses and say all will need to be re-interviewed.
