Emancipation Proclamation tour makes a local stop
ALBANY, N.Y. – A piece of history is making a stop in Albany this weekend. The only surviving version of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in President Lincoln's handwriting is at the New York State Museum.
The two-day exhibit is part of a statewide tour of the document.
Both the Proclamation and a manuscript of a speech delivered by Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior in 1962 for the Proclamation's centennial will be on display today and tomorrow, from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Lincoln released the preliminary document on September 22nd, 1862, three months before the official version.
