KINGSTON, N.Y. -- The holiday season can be a tough time for needy families and the elderly. That's why police officers and radio station WGHQ is taking part in their 45th annual Happy Christmas Fund radio-thon.

Walter Maxwell's father started the fundraiser back in the 60s. He says the proceeds help buy clothes and toys for kids and food for seniors.

Maxwell said, "The community has not forgotten the Happy Christmas Fund. There are people from Sandy recovering and people still left over from Irene last year. The community is stepping forward. It absolutely amazes me."

Although the main event is the telethon, Maxwell says most of the money comes in as checks.
