SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady County Sheriff's office hosted its third gun buyback event in an effort to get dangerous weapons off the streets.

People who brought in a gun could get a gift card ranging from $25 to $250, depending on what type of gun was brought in.

The program is being offered at a different spot each month and Saturday's was at the Boys and Girls Club on Craig Street. The sheriff says any gun brought in makes the streets safer.

"The difference is that it's one less gun that has the potential of ending up on the streets, involved in a violent crime. So any gun that's brought in is a win for us," said Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino.

So far, 21 handguns and 21 rifles have been collected through the program.
