SCOTIA, N.Y. -- A cat hoarding case in Schenectady puts a local Animal Protective Foundation in a tough spot. This comes after officials were called to an elderly woman's home last week to find insect infestation and more than 20 cats.
Most of those cats were brought to APF in Scotia, and the rest are at PetSmart in Niskayuna. While the APF said the cats were in relatively good health, and more were even spade, they said they can't keep the cats due to overcrowding.
To alleviate the issue, a special adoption day was held on Saturday, where cats that are one year and older were given away for free. Kittens were sold for $50. Officials said it's important to find the cats new homes, and soon.
"There's a maximum healthy capacity to any shelter, and we're beyond that right now. Which means, with more animals, the animals are more stressed, which brings up more illness. And, if there's not isolation and room to treat them, unfortunately animals have to be euthanized," said Marguerite Pearson, APF Director of Communications.
All cats will be vaccinated, spayed, and neutered at the time of sale. Pearson said there will be more promotions running through next week. For more information, visit www.animalprotective.org.
