ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The City of Elmira is still recovering after last week's tornado touchdown.

Monday night, Mayor Susan Skidmore appeared on Capital Tonight to give an update on the clean-up. She said the city was incredibly fortunate to not suffer any injuries or deaths.

Most of the damage involved trees and electrical wiring. She said crews are still out on the street trying to restore the remaining outages and restore the city to normal.

"I was out Thursday night with the fire department and the haz-mat, so I saw all of the initial devastation. Those people are still out there. The fire department has basically gone back to normal. But the police and the department of public works, streets program and buildings and grounds program is out there furiously working," said Mayor Skidmore.

Skidmore also said the state Department of Transportation is out in full force to aid the city workers as well as people from the non-profit First Response Team America which deploys specialized equipment to disaster areas across the country.

She said the storm will not hold the city back from the building projects it had started.
