SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady Museum is undergoing a transformation to become a first of its kind education center in the Capital Region.

The museum will soon be a regional science and education center.

As part of the change, the region's only Challenger Learning Center will be added. That's based on the space shuttle and NASA space exploration program and will give students a change to explore a space-themed STEM program.

The museum is also partnering with the San Francisco-based Exploratorium Museum, which will provide interactive science exhibits for the next five years.

Neil and Jane Golub, with the Price Chopper Corporation, were instrumental in helping bring the changes to the museum.

“This area really has become kind of a vortex, if you will, for science and engineering and in order to prepare our students for future years, we have to educate them in STEM education: Science, technology, engineering and math. That's what this program is all about,” Neil Golub said.

Construction on the new center is expected to be completed by the end of the year and the first student programs will begin in 2013.
