UNITED STATES -- The State Health Commissioner says one in five New Yorkers with HIV doesn’t know they have it. About 130,000 New Yorkers are currently living with HIV/AIDS, and nearly 4,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

New York has a law in place to facilitate testing. Since September of 2010, HIV testing has been made available to all people between the ages of 13 and 64 who receive hospital or primary care services.

The Health Department says there's been a 13-percent increase in testing since the law went into effect. Health care experts say like with many diseases, early detection is key in treatment.

Anyone who is looking for more information can call the Health Department's AIDS hotline at 1-800-541-AIDS.
