UNITED STATES -- Heading out for your summer road trip will cost you less than expected. AAA reports the national average for a gallon of gas has dropped almost two cents in the past day.

Today's average is at $3.45, and analysts say if this trend continues, we could see $3 for a gallon of regular gas by the fall. That's a far cry from the $5 a gallon talks this past winter.

Drivers in New York continue to pay above average, but prices are following the downward trend. The average price today is down more than a penny to $3.67. AAA says the price in Massachusetts is down to $3.47., and in New Jersey, it's $3.33 a gallon.
