Louisville, Ky. -- Just one week after winning the Belmont Stakes, it looks like jockey John Velazquez will be sidelined indefinitely by a broken right collarbone. Velazquez took a spill in the ninth race on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Kentucky.
Velazquez was taken from the track on a stretcher and transported to a hospital in Louisville. The horse he was riding had to be put down on the track.
According to NYRA, Velazquez's wife, Leona, flew to Kentucky on Sunday to be with him while doctors evaluated his injury.
Johnny V, as he is known to fans at the Spa, is scheduled to be inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame in the middle of this summer's Saratoga meet.
