LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. -- People heading to Lake George and nearby waterways could now face fines and even jail time if they are not careful about keeping their boats, trailers and fishing equipment extra clean.

A new law in Warren County aimed at stopping the spread of invasive species in waterways is making it illegal to introduce species through contaminated equipment. Penalties can reach up to a $5,000 fine and 15 days in jail.

The area is battling pests like Asian clams, zebra mussels and curly leaf pond weed. According to officials, even common aquarium plants are becoming a problem because people dumb them in waterways.

Signs are being posted at launches and visitors are being told to make sure their equipment has been cleaned.
