Man arrested after violent struggle with police

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. --A man is behind bars after a violent struggle with Amsterdam police early this morning. Police said Gabriel Arroyo, 27, entered a home on Reid Street around 12:30 a.m., despite a restraining order, and punched a woman just before slashing her car tires and taking off.

Police then received a call from Division Street where Arroyo was reportedly causing a disturbance. When they arrived, police said Arroyo began yelling at them and then ran to a closet in the home.

Officers said four of them were assaulted by Arroyo as they tried to arrest him.

He faces charges of assault, harassment, and weapons possession. Police said they found a loaded shotgun during the arrest.
