ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Northeast Kidney Foundation hosted its annual Albany Kidney Walk and first ever 5K for Kidneys on Sunday. Hundreds of runners came out to the University of Albany to help raise awareness and funds for the Kidney Foundation.

Last year the walk raised about $150,000. All of the money raised goes towards local pre-screening programs, patient assistance programs, public education and health care advocacy.

"26 million people across the U.S. have kidney disease. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes, so it's really great to say that all the money we raise is going to stay right here in the Capital Region," said Carol Lafleur, Executive Director of Northeast Kidney Foundation.

Currently there are about 1.2 million New Yorkers with kidney disease.
