POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Poughkeepsie police make an arrest in a shooting death at the Rip Van Winkle Apartments Wednesday evening.

A 911 call came in around 7:30 p.m., but when officers arrived, several witnesses said someone drove the victim to Vassar Hospital. BaShawn Edward, 26, was pronounced dead a short time later.

Witnesses helped police identify a potential suspect and his car was pulled over in the Town of Poughkeepsie about an hour after the shooting. Derrick West Jr., 27, was taken into custody.

Investigators said Edward and West knew each other.

"We believe it's been an ongoing dispute between the two men involved," said Det. Sgt. Walter Horton. "It dates back to 2006. They've had confrontations since then on a number of occasions that have been documented by the police department."

West pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and is being held at Dutchess County Jail.
