SCHOHARIE, N.Y. -- It started as a vision five years ago, and soon it will turn into reality.
"It's been a long time coming," said Assemblyman Peter Lopez.
Next fall, residents in the valley will be able to take strolls along the Schoharie Creek. Assemblyman Lopez and community members gathered Monday for a Groundbreaking ceremony to launch the "Rails to Trails" project.
"Soon there will be people cross-county skiing. They will be snow shooting. There might be a horse or two on the trail. There will be people on bikes," Lopez said.
The project is being funded through several grants.
Volunteers will help build a pedestrian-biking trail along the Schoharie gateway. The trail will be ten feet wide and more than a mile long. It will also be handicapped accessible.
"We are opening up the valley, the creek, we are working with the Conservation Association. We hope to have a fishing launch for small boats and people will be able to enjoy what the valley has to offer," said Lopez.
For those living there, the new trail will be a place where they can take in the views of nature right in their backyard.
