A fearless hunter and loyal companion are just two of the traits that make the miniature pinscher a favorite of many dog lovers. Lisa Chelenza has more about the miniature pinscher in this edition of Pet Pointers.

Best known for their energetic personality, the modern “min pin” is said to be a mix of several breeds including the Italian greyhound and German pointer, giving them the perfect combination of speed and tenacity to be prized as ratters by farmers in Germany hundreds of years ago.

Leah Pekarsky has been involved with miniature pinscher rescue for more than ten years and tells us what she finds so attractive about the breed.

“They are so feisty and so much fun they are always clowning around and always up for anything and they are super smart. Mine wakes up every day and thinks ‘what can I get away with today?’” said Pekarsky, Min Pin Rescue.

Chip is big for a miniature pinscher, they typically weigh in at 10 to 15 pounds. This intelligent alert and curious family companion wants to be treated like a full-sized dog, not babied because of their size. Min pins need physical and mental exercise and are at their best with a daily walk and a few minutes of obedience training or playtime every day.
