A dog that is made up of several different breeds has been newly admitted to the AKC. In this edition of Pet Pointers, Lisa Chelenza has more about the Leonberger.

The Leonberger was added to the American Kennel Club’s working group in 2010, but has been a working family companion originating in Leonberg, Germany since the 1800s. They were almost completely wiped out during World War I, but were brought back by a few dedicated enthusiasts.

While the Leonberger may look intimidating with their lion-like features and large size, about 30 inches tall at the shoulder, they are actually gentle, friendly, obedient and calm. So much so that their personality and temperament are the first trait Leonberger lovers will mention.

After raising Great Pyrenees for over twenty years, Betsy Hoffmeier fell in love with the Leonberger.

“They are such a family friendly dog. They really desire to be a member of the family. Their temperaments are terrific, absolutely terrific,” said Betsy Hoffmeier, a pet owner.

The coat colors of the Leonberger can vary from reddish brown to sandy brown, but they always have a signature black mask and mane. They require daily brushing to keep their water resistant double coat smooth and mat free. The Leonberger is at their best with moderate exercise daily, but is happy to lounge with their people anytime.
