While they are thought of as the peacock of dogs by many people, the Standard Poodle is more athlete than accessory. In this edition of Pet Pointers, Lisa Chelenza has more about these dogs.

They are extremely intelligent, great swimmers, and originally developed as a water retriever. No, it’s not a Labrador - it’s the Standard Poodle! While thought to be of French decent, the breed actually comes from Germany. It’s thought the English word ”poodle” comes from the German word “pudel” or “pudelin,” to splash in water.

The unique haircut we commonly see is actually functional, designed to keep their joints warm and regulate body temperature in cold water.

More of a companion animal in a modern world, poodles like Carson, featured here, are athletic dogs that still maintain their old world behaviors and are great at competitive agility, obedience, and retrieving.

Their water resistant coat must be groomed regularly, but because poodles do not shed their coat, these dogs are great for people who are allergic to pet fur. Their coat comes in a wide variety of colors, from black to apricot. Poodles are also the only AKC recognized breed that comes in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy, but all follow the same breed standards.

While the poodle is in the AKC’s non-sporting group, don’t be fooled. A poodle’s family better be able to keep up with this lively, energetic breed.
