This company makes an environmentally friendly product, kiln-dried firewood that can be safely transported to summer cottages and campgrounds without fear of introducing invasive species that might damage the forest. But Green Renewable Inc. is ecologically friendly in another way.
Green Renewable Inc. President Sean Gallivan said, "There are several companies out there with the ability to kiln-dry firewood. Our facility here happens to be a unique facility due to the fact that we are a CHP facility and that means we are a combined heat and power generator. We have the ability here to take our wood chips, our fuel source, to not only heat the kilns but also generate steam. The steam then is run through a cycle that spins a turbine, a generator, and we have the ability to power up the whole facility."
In fact, they generate excess power that can be sold back to the grid or to power other companies that might locate at the site.
Gallivan said, "We don’t have any waste here at this facility. Years ago log yards and lumber operations had a lot of waste. They would just take their sawdust and throw it in a big pile. They would take all the bark that came off the logs via heat-treating or just fell off and they would push it over a bank. Today, every product here has a spot either it’s utilized through a gasifier and burned to supplement our wood chip product here that we heat the facility with or it’s sold for landscape supplies and used in shrub beds throughout the Capital District."
They also make animal bedding from wood shavings for use on horse and dairy farms.
